Me-Made-Maternity : Megan Nielsen dress (W32)
October is almost over, Halloween is upon us, and there are only a few leaves left on the trees. We enjoyed the nice autumn weather last Saturday in the park and took pictures of a dress that I wear very, very, very often lately.
I made this dress at the end of the summer, when I had a lot of energy, as an anticipation for the next few months and I think that it was the best idea I had at that time. As I told you in my last post, it is starting to be more difficult for me to sew lately but I still have a few projects to show you before the end of this pregnancy, so I think I have actually sewn a LOT after the summer without noticing it!
I saw this dress on Elo when she was pregnant a few months ago, and thought it would be the perfect pattern for me to use. I ordered two maternity pattern of Megan Nielsen : the top and the skirt, to mix together as a dress. I really like the patterns of this brand : instructions are always very clear and the fit is good. However, I haven’t used any dresses pattern before as the bust size is too big for my normal size. But as I -apparently- put on weight lately, it fits me now and I can try more Megan Nielsen patterns!
As said earlier, I used the Cara Maternity top as a base, and lengthen it as a dress following the Erin skirt pattern. But I saw after that you could actually lengthen it with instructions, so the skirt is not really an obligation to buy in this case…. I started with a short sleeves version in a light grey knit, and wore it loads in september. As it didn’t take me too long to make this first version, I got a bit crazy that day, and decided to sew a second one straight after : thats what I mean when I tell you I had SO MUCH energy at that time!!!) After making the first one, I realised that the gathers were a bit too down on me, so I changed that on this version by making the gathers 1-2 cm higher.
I sewed this dress mostly with my serger but I used a twin needle on the sewing machine for the finishes. When I think that, only a year ago, I was so afraid to sew knit fabric …! It’s probably my favorite fabric now! This dress was a very simple and quick make so I don’t have that many things to say about it.
Regarding the fabric, I used a grey knit that I found in Globetex (Montreal shop) during the Spring for only… 4.5$ a meter and used about 1.5m for this dress. Cheap maternity wardrobe right! I wear this dress a lot lately and the quality is good for the price. The only bad thing is that this baby is kicking a lot on the right side of my belly, so I keep rubbing my belly on the right all the time, so the fabric tends to be pilling a bit on that side… but it’s not a big deal!
This dress is just the perfect uniform for me lately, as it fits perfectly the belly and the rest of the body, and I don’t feel like “a huge mama to be” in it 🙂 I’m not sure I would wear this type of dresses being non pregnant but for now the only thing to say is : I LOVE IT.
Have a nice week-end and happy Halloween!
