For quite a long time now, I was looking for patterns for my two years old niece. If you look online, you can find tones of patterns for kids. I used internet as my inspiration place as I dont regulary buy Burda magazines. I’ve been surprised by the number of pattern you can find online. A lot of them are indépendant pattern available on Etsy. But it seems like I haven’t find the best way to look for them. So I went back to my good friend Pinterest (replacing Google?!). Have you found a good way to search online for patterns like that when you don’t really what you want to make? I’ve seen some really nice patterns on Instagram by Ivanne Soufflet, but I didn’t have the book sadly… Maybe I should think about buying it if I need to make other dresses in the future. So I spent few hours online looking for THE pattern for my darling. I decided in the end to go for a dress I knew already : Geranium Dress, from Made By Rae. This dress looks a lot like Washi dress, the adult version that i’ve made here this winter. I went for the simple version, with a gathered skirt. The good thing about Rae’s pattern is that you can always make a lot of version of the pattern you buy : dresses, top, pleated skirt, gathered skirt, ruffles sleeves, normal sleeves… I listened to my sister and went for a size 3T, as my niece is not the small kind.
This dress is not too hard to make even if I like more to do adult clothes than kids : everything is smaller so you need to be very precise. I reduced the size of the skirt as I didn’t like the style of the original one. It could have been a bit longer tho I think, maybe 3 or 4 cm more when my niece is wearing a nappy!) I’ve made a belt with the fabric I had left, a little personal style that I like to add on the clothing.
Few details were a bit surprising tho, as an example the back seams allowance that you have to stitch to the dress? I haven’t done them this way as you could have seen the stitching line on the outside of the dress, something I didn’t like. I’ve made a size 3 but I think the american 3 years is maybe different from the french one as it is a bit tight on the underarms. The bust could be a bit longer too in my opinion so I attached the belt in a way to give the impression that the bust is longer than it is already. Anyway, all in all, this dress fits her well and she looked happy with it. It was funny to see her modeling it as she usually doesn’t really like to be taken in pictures! But this time, she loved it! And you, what are your essential for kids? Because if santa ask for an other one for winter I’m gonna need some inspiration and advices…. !
