Coco - Tilly & the buttons
Coco, is a knitted dress with a 60’s style from Tilly and the Buttons.
I came across this pattern quite a long time ago but I have held off buying it as I didn’t have my serger. I found it to be very nice but quite simple at first so I didn’t know if I should buy it or not.
And then for Christmas, Santa Claus (aka my boyfriend’s nan) sent me some British pounds in a card. It was the perfect opportunity to support English pattern designers so I spent some time looking at different Cocos, and some of the ones I saw really convinced me, such as Heather’s from Closet case files. I also bought the Françoise pattern from Tilly and Kim dress from BHL. I didn’t have any basic jerseys like this which are very comfy to wear so I ordered it. The delivery was very fast and I actually received it on the 24th! Perfect timing!
Tilly’s patterns are amazing. The packaging is very cute and well made and the pattern is printed on thick paper (like Deer and Doe) which is something I really love because it doesn’t tend to tear apart after a few uses. The booklet is also very nice and bright with pictures which makes everything very clear. In the end I didn’t really use the instructions as I made my Moneta dress a few days before and I knew how to use the serger and the double needle on my sewing machine.
I went for a UK size 2 which fits me perfectly and I didn’t have any adjustments to make. The sleeves are maybe a little large but I like to be comfy so I left them like that. I’ve heard some comments about the seams allowance (1.5cm) which was hard for some people to stick to but it worked out fine for me.
This garment is so easy and quick to make! I chose not to make the collar as it wasn’t really my style so I only had 4 pieces to sew together: the front, the back and two sleeves. I cut and sewed it in less than two hours for sure. The type of sewing you sometimes need!
The fabric is from Globetex, the shop in Montreal that I have mentioned a few times already. I chose some simple, neutral and warm fabrics ideal for winter. One thing is for sure, I’m not exactly sticking to my New Year’s resolution which was to not sew using so much blue…. my last three garments have all been blue! But I swear I’ll try to test some new colours soon! Maybe when spring comes along I’ll feel more inspired! According to my plan, March should be a month that brings some new colours that I haven’t tried before so stay tuned!
I thought about wearing this dress with a belt at first but it affects the fit of the dress as it is not straight which is a shame. This pattern is perfect for beginners at working with knit fabric. If you’ve never tried before, go for it!
Another easy going garment, but that’s what I was clearly missing in my wardrobe! So, do you like it? Have a nice week guys!
Thanks again Margaret for this really nice gift, I hope you like what I’ve made!
